Me slurping my tea (not crying into it just yet) wearing my Star Wars PJ’s. Illustration: Keanan Eltaweel
It’s a constant conundrum being mummy & me
With the permanent question: This time, whose turn will it be?
Motherhood has been skewed
To mean sacrifice & servitude
Married or not
No, it’s not your ‘lot’
Alone to be respons – ible
For homework & household, as though you alone are able
Whatever happened to parenthood?
Yes, you both should & could
Unless it’s by choice
That one of you does it, in which case, rejoice!
For you have a wonderful role
I just hope that you’re supported, & extol
What it means to be ‘human’ first on the agenda
No matter a person’s gender
So next time you cry into your tea,
It’s ok, just remember what it means to be ‘me’
You are a person, delicate & clever
With a whole lot more that you need to discover
Bring on equality, with all that it promises
So that mothering is not about which price to pay Mrs.
It’s said it takes a village to bring up a child
They make us believe it can’t be reconciled
To have ambition, desire, with so much to do, be & see
Remember that the next time you cry in your tea
Remember, it’s ok to be mummy & me.
