Cyber Monday.& Black Friday. It’s hard to pass them up. You’re probably exhausted. Exhausted from hours of trawling online for things you ’need’ and how to get the best deal, probably done in the dead of night, after you’ve put everything and everyone in your life to bed – just when your decision-making faculties are at their worst. Or exhausted because you had to – at some level – fight and deliberately ignore the constant pull into consumerism.
Those who don’t survive the temptation-onslaught collectively spend huge – HUGE – amounts of money. Billions of dollars. Great for the economy you might say – but not so great for, well, life. The cartoon above – it says it all!
If it made you smile, laugh even, then you’re one of us.
People like us think about what we need, and keep the ‘want’ chimp on a rein – that’s sometimes slack, sometimes tight, depending on what’s going on in life.
It’s exciting to get, buy, gift, give something special. But the cyber-frenzied fortnight is the stuff of nightmares – excitement turns into anguish. Happiness to hysteria.
How about taking a step back and remembering what’s important to you and yours – and spending deliberately. It doesn’t have to be money.
I love that some companies don’t participate because they don’t believe in what it stands for – this is what dryrobe did: dryrobe are opting out of Black Friday & cyber Monday. We are closing our office and giving the staff a paid day off on Friday the 25th November. We will be spending the day outside. The website will still be operational but we don’t wish to be a part of the insanity.
Love it. Love them. #OptOut #OptOutside.
Looking for something great to gift? This is what I go for.
Black Friday & cyber Monday: Great for your wallet or consumerism on drugs? Did you spend ‘cos you decided it was a ‘saving’? What do you have to say about this? Go on, make some noise.
